2014 Race Plans… Still a Work in Progress

This is the first time in at least a few years that I don’t have a single race on the calendar. Really, nothing.

While everyone else I know was signing up for 2014 races throughout the fall and early winter, I stuck to the decision I made that I wouldn’t sign up for anything until I got through Brazil. Now that Brazil is behind me, I need to schedule some races to run.

With that in mind, I was looking at the Hardrock qualifiers list the other day. (I don’t have any intention of running Hardrock – not in the near future at least – but I like the idea of sticking to races that are “difficult enough” to be Hardrock-worthy.)  This year, they took a few 100s off the list of official qualifiers and added some others. Three of the four 100s I’ve done are on the list (the only one missing is San Diego 100, which isn’t a surprise).  If I do another 100 this year, it may as well be one of the ones on that list.

One other thing is certain. I don’t plan to race at all this spring. I definitely need some time to properly recover, then Elizabeth and I are going to South East Asia, and then it will already be March.

As far as planning goes, I have two races potentially in the works.  For the summer, I applied for something secret, not-so-secret and I’ll hear about that in a few weeks.

For the fall, I entered the Wasatch 100 lottery.  That lottery is happening on Saturday. It’s a longshot, so if that doesn’t work out, I’m considering Cascade Crest (lottery opens February 1), Pine to Palm or Mogollon Monster. Or maybe something altogether different. I haven’t looked at the calendar too closely to see if those races conflict with anything but I’ll get on it after I find out about Wasatch.

Also, I should think about doing some “shorter” races like 50k or 50 mile. But I don’t know. Between Brazil and some other big potential races, my racing travel budget is pretty much obliterated, so they’d have to be local(ish) races.

With the way races are filling up extra quickly this year, I need to look into it all soon! Updates to come soon.
