August.  My last full month of training before The Bear.  That Bear which is exactly 4 weeks from today.

It was a good running month.  Running 300 miles in a month is nothing to sneeze at, but it’s less than I’d hoped for.  Recovering from White River 50, a Saturday volunteering at the Mt. Disappointment 50k, a mid-month knee pain scare and the travel to and from Leadville to crew and pace Rod each took their toll and cost me some miles here and there.  Looking back at my training log for the month, one interesting thing is that I got a much larger chunk of those 300 miles in my mid-week runs than I expected to.  Each week I did 2-3 mid-week runs in the 9-16 mile range.  On the flip side though, I didn’t do very many of the traditional ultra-training Saturday-Sunday back-to-back long runs; weekends consisted of one long run (20-28 miles) and one shorter run (10, 6, 0, 13 miles).  What does all that mean?  Who knows.  I could probably sit here all afternoon trying to analyze my training log but I won’t really know how this month’s training prepared me for the Bear until sometime on the evening/night of Friday, September 28.

Other than running, I made it to the pool a few times for lunchtime swims with Evan.  I went to yoga a few times in the first half of the month and haven’t been since.  I’ll try to get back there next week.
The highlights of the month were pacing and crewing Rod to his 26:51 finish at Leadville
and and the Baldy run I did with Lukas, Dom and Brian last weekend.

Both were crazy fun adventures.  And both were great preparation for The Bear – long days on my feet, steep hiking, solid running, working on dialing in nutrition and hydration.
As September begins, I’ve got one week of good, solid training, then it’ll be time to taper.

Happy long weekend to all!

Solid dude. You’re ready as anyone can be for Bear. Great seeing you over the weekend.

  2. Though there is no minimum water quantity, intake of water should be sufficient enough to avoid the body from dehydration.
