Starting strong in 2007

It’s 2007. The year of my Ironman. I guess that means it’s time to stop screwing around. Hopefully I haven’t exactly been “screwing around” these last few months, but my race preparation certainly isn’t going to be getting any easier! I’m scheduled for 11:35 of training this week. Yesterday was my sole day off (and thank goodness it was – more below) and four of the other six days are doubles (two are bike/run and two are swim/strength). One big difference between this week and other recent high volume weeks is that I have a longer run (1:20) and longer bike (2:45) than I’ve been doing.

New Year’s Eve was a blast. Elizabeth and I went to a party at Tad and Carrie’s place, where we’ve spent a bunch of recent New Year’s. It was a small group, but we’re all good friends and we always have fun together. As expected, we were out really late – the first time I’d done that in a while. Yesterday (New Year’s Day) is mostly a blur – I was just plain exhausted all day. Thankfully, I didn’t feel any pressure at all to workout – and instead spent the day sleeping, watching football and eating. My biggest activity was taking Charlie for a few walks. Any exercise would have been a disaster!

This morning though, I got right back at it. The alarm went off at 6:30 and even though all I wanted to do was stay in bed, I got up, set up the bike in front of Sportscenter and rode for 1:15. It was a pretty good spin. I got my heart rate up and felt pretty strong. The time even went by fairly quickly.

Work today was pretty miserable. I can’t explain why, but I was just in a foul mood all day. Normally, working out in the morning helps me stay mentally balanced, but today, man, oh, man, today there was no balance whatsoever. I’m sure I’m still recovering from our trip out West and New Years, but I did get a good night’s sleep last night. Hopefully, another good sleep tonight will help.

Because I wasn’t getting anything done at work, I decided to leave a little early. So, I came home and did my run. The run went well and I felt good and thankfully, was able to wash the crappy day out of my system. Now, instead of being stressed and tired, I’m just plain tired.
