Becoming a fish
With strong swims yesterday and today, I have now swam more this year (5 months and 2 days) than in any prior year of my life. I’m currently at 256,967 meters.* My previous best in any year was 252,592 in 2007, my first year training for an Ironman. (I actually broke my record yesterday, but didn’t realize it until after today’s swim.)
And not only am I swimming a lot, I’m swimming better than ever before. I feel more comfortable and confident in the water and while I’m sure my form isn’t pretty compared to the life-long swimmers I see at the pool, hopefully it’s at least above average. And my endurance and speed aren’t bad either. I guess that consistently swimming 4+ days per week will do all of that.
My goal is to swim 300,000 meters before July 6. That works out to less than 10,000 meters per week for the next 4 1/2 weeks, which should definitely be do-able even with the increased running and the travel coming up this month.
*The numbers are screwy because I swim in both 25 yard and 50 meter pools and convert the yards swims to meters for my log. I’m a bit superstitious about swim distances and pretty much never get out of the pool on anything other than a “whole 100” and usually either an even hundred or a -,500 (i.e. 2,500 or 3,600 but not 3,100 or 2,650)!
