Monthly Summary – January 2013

Notwithstanding the fact that in the first mile of this morning’s 13 mile run at Los Liones, I rolled my ankle and then a couple minutes later took a nice spill, January was a really good month of training and a great way to kick off 2013.

The highlight of the month was my run (mostly, hike) last Sunday up Bear Canyon to the top of Mt. Baldy.

It was the first time I’d done that route since before Bear last September and my first “real” winter trail run.  It felt pretty cool to strap on the microspikes at 9,000 feet and continue to run through the snow and ice to the top.

I feel like my running is coming along.  My motivation is most of the way back, my biggest struggle has been getting used to the early mornings again.  I am always a morning person, but it was much harder to get up today at 4:30 then it was last summer when I was motivated by fear of the Bear!

Other than working my way back into a running rhythm, I swam a fair amount (10 times) and would probably have gotten in a couple more if not for the week I spent downtown for jury duty.  I didn’t get on the bike and pretty much failed with efforts to do regular strength training or yoga (though I did work in some basic quick core and leg exercises a few times that aren’t reflected in my training log).

In the next couple weeks, I hope to finalize my racing plans for the year.

Here’s January:

Swim: 19,200 meters
Cycling (outdoors): 0.0 miles
Cycling (indoors): 0:30 (hours)
Run: 201.3 miles
Total Run Elevation Gain: 46,896 feet (new stat added this month)
Strength Training/Yoga: 4 sessions
Approximate monthly total training time: 50.6 hours
