Monthly Summary – July 2012

Here’s July 2012:
This month was all about getting ready for and finally running the White River 50. I summarized the race yesterday and I’ll get a full race report up soon.
It was a good month for training even if I ideally would have gotten a few more miles in. Spending about a third of the month tapering (7 days), racing (1 day) and recovering (3 days) will do that though. Lukas and I connected all the dots on the Backbone Trail and now I’ve run every step of the trail in both directions. The goal of checking out the whole thing was to prepare ourselves to run the entire 68 mile trail at once sometime this summer or fall. Trying to fit that in before the Bear 100 (and get in proper recovery) might be tough, but if not before the race, we can always do it sometime after.
The other activity that I started getting into this month was some hot yoga at Moksha Yoga LA. I really enjoy yoga and know how beneficial it is for all endurance athletes (especially ones like me who otherwise wouldn’t do much core or strength work). Moksha is sorta close to home and I had a free pass. The first class kicked my ass enough that I went back a few times over the last couple weeks. My favorite thing about the Moksha classes is that – in the classes I’ve taken at least – there’s much more emphasis on the stretch and holding more “simple” poses instead of trying to get super complex with poses I couldn’t do anyway. I walk out of the classes totally drenched and exhausted but also feeling refreshed and carrying much less tension in my back, legs and shoulders.
August should be more of the same – lots of running (including hopefully a decent amount of time climbing around in the San Gabriels), regular visits to Moksha to sweat and stretch and some swimming mixed in for good measure. I got on the bike once in July and while it was a great ride with my Dad (who left today for a long ride down the Washington coast, go Dad!), I can’t see myself putting my ass on the saddle again until fall.
Serious running miles!
To answer your question I have tried Nuun but I find it too fizzy!
I have yet to try the EFS stuff…maybe soon?
