This year is just flying by. What happened in May? I ran and ran and ran. I didn’t run the mileage that I was running in 2010 when I was preparing for
AC100, but it was my biggest running month in a while and, in general, I felt really good doing it. (no jinx, no jinx)
On the other hand, that’s pretty much all I did. A few pretty weak swims and one bike ride, a few strength training/core sessions. But as I’ve mentioned many times, running is really what I love to do and while I’d
like to spend more time on the bike and in the water, I’m almost always going to choose to run. The few times I got into the pool this month were pretty much a disaster. I wasn’t “swimming” as much as I was “flailing”. But I guess that’s what I get! One thing is for sure though, I need to be much more conscientious about strength and core training and yoga. If I’m going to keep up this running – and hopefully increase the volume – I’m asking for trouble if I don’t add in a couple strength and yoga sessions each week. Again, easier said than done, but I need to do it!
The highlights this month were a few long mountain runs. There was the awesome day I spent on the AC100 course with Colin and Sally. I had mostly forgotten how tough that course is!
Also, Lukas and I have been running the Backbone Trail section-by-section. We’re doing out-and-back runs (10-13 miles out and then the same back to the start) with the goal of checking out the entire 68 mile trail over the next month or so. I’ve run most sections of the trail before but there’s a part in the middle I’ve never seen. We’ll hopefully hit part of that this coming weekend. We’re thinking/hoping to do the entire trail one day later in the summer.
And I finally signed up for a race. After bailing on Honu, I really wanted to put a running race on the summer calendar. I signed up for White River 50, which is run at Crystal Mountain, near Mt. Rainier, outside of Seattle. From everything I’ve heard about the race, I’m psyched for a pretty tough race in a gorgeous setting. Here’s the elevation profile, that first nine mile, 3,000′ feet of gain, climb is gonna be killer:
The middle section from Kanan north over Sandstone is IMHO the best…enjoy!
