Monthly Summary – October 2012
I really didn’t know what to expect after running 100 miles. The only other time I did it was at AC in 2010 and that time around, I didn’t have time to recover before I had my spinal surgery, which knocked me out of commission for a couple months.
So I’ve taken it easy and slow. I didn’t run at all for the first week, but I did manage some easy hiking. The second week post-race was my most cross-training-ist week in years: I did a little running, a little swimming, a little cycling (what??) and a little yoga. Since then, I’ve been slowing increasing the run volume while continuing to get into the pool about twice per week and to yoga once or twice a week. (My weekly mileage was: 0, 11.9, 27.2, 43.1) I haven’t put my butt back on the bike saddle though. Since doing a little more cycling is one of my fall/winter goals, I should get back to that in November.
Last week, I got out for five runs on trails and roads for a total of 43 miles. I’ll probably match that total this week. Assuming I feel good next week, I’ll increase the volume a little bit and try to work in a little more intensity.
I swam more this month that any other month this year. And I had a blast doing it. I’ve mostly been swimming with Evan, and concentrating on shorter, more intense intervals – 50s, 25s and even 16s (one-third of the 50 meter pool). I spend nearly all of my running time doing long, slow, distance steady pace running. Doing intervals in the pool is a great change. It’s also much more fun than just head down staring-at-the-black-line-at-the-bottom-of-the-pool lap-after-lap distance swimming.
