2007 Season – Part 2

The second half of my 2007 season has now started in earnest. I’m still working toward some pretty lofty goals and it will all culminate with a big race, but there will be some important differences between the first half of 2007 and this coming second half.

I had a long call with Coach John a few days ago to discuss the next few months. As I’ve mentioned, the rest of my season is Mighty Hamptons (September 16), San Diego Triathlon Challenge (October 28) and the JFK 50 (November 17). The first two will be for fun, the last one probably won’t be any “fun” at all! The 50 is 13 weeks from today. And given my training and racing history during the last year-or-so, I am comfortable with my base heading into this. I feel that 13 weeks should be enough time to get ready to run the 50. But I definitely have to get at it. This means that starting last week, my run volume is going up, up and my bike and swim training time is going to take a backseat. I’m still going to spend some time in the pool and on the bike, but mostly doing just enough to keep up my swim and bike fitness and give me a little training time off my feet.

If all goes as planned, I’ll probably be running 5-6 times a week (some days with double runs). One of those runs will be a long run (getting progressively longer as the weeks go on), one will be some kind of speed work (Strides, generally) and the rest will be easy, short runs to get more time and mileage in. I’ll also hopefully do at least one swim per week and one or two bike rides. We’ll see.

I do have a slight ache and swollen point in the bottom of the outside of my right foot (middle of the foot, opposite my arch) and my lower back is a little sore. I’ve been doing extra stretching and icing and will play it by ear for the next couple weeks – keeping my fingers crossed that it will go away.
