Base Period Three Continued
I’m right in the middle of Base Period Three – just plugging away at my hours. This week and next are heavy bike weeks, with less of an emphasis on running or swimming. The weather is turning to spring, so hopefully, I’ll get to do more of those rides outside!
Thankfully I’ve been feeling great recently and really being able to focus on proper training without worrying about extraneous issues like injuries or stress that would cause my preparation to falter. As always, I’m trying to be careful not to get ahead of myself, but things are going really well right now. I think this is why I haven’t written all week – I’m just doing it without really considering why or thinking about it (or the future) too much. And this week I had fun doing it.
I had a great, fast run yesterday morning. My goal was to do a negative split – do the second half at a faster pace than the first half – and I succeeded. For the first 40 minutes, I ran about 7:45’s and then ran probably a full minute per mile faster for the return 35 minutes. I got home nearly five minutes faster than it took me to go out. And the best part was that my heart rate was pretty controlled the whole time.
The bad news of the week is that Charlie’s going back under the knife. Last weekend, his OTHER leg started bothering him and I took him back to the surgeon, who recommended surgery. When we first brought him to the surgeon before his last surgery, the doctor said that his left leg was really bad but his right leg was also showing signs of luxation and it would probably also need surgery at some point. Well, that point is now. Fortunately, it waited until he was all healed from the first surgery to show signs of problems. Unfortunately, he’ll have to go through it all over again. And so will we. What a bummer…
