Moving right along

Elizabeth left last night for Sundance and the combination of getting up early for my swim lesson and having such a quiet house (Charlie spent the day at daycare and went right to bed after I picked him up, as usual) made me sleepy early. I read for a little bit, but was out cold before 9:30, I think. It felt great. My alarm went off just before 6:30 and I thought about snoozing a little, but decided that I’d be happier if I just got up and got moving. I ate a little, had my green tea and left for the gym.

I warmed-up quickly on a bike and then did my strength testing on Seated Row and Hamstring Curl. On the row, I warmed up with eight reps at 70 pounds, then did ten at 140. Since I got ten reps pretty easily, I rested for a few minutes and tried again at 160. This time, I got seven reps. Good enough for today. On the Hamstring Curl, I did eight reps at 70 pounds, then six at 120.

After the lifting, I went down to the pool for a pretty long swim. I did 3,400 yards, but broken up into a bunch of drills and sets, including a lot of kicking and one-arm swimming. The main set was 10×100 and 10×50, each at my T-pace (1:44/100). I found that I was going considerably faster than 1:44, averaging probably 1:35/100. I imagine that the next time I test for T-pace, it will be somewhere in the 1:30’s. I tried incorporating some of yesterday’s lesson into the swimming. I concentrated a lot on getting my arm to enter the water lower. I had to think about it a fair bit, but I was getting used to it. I struggled to get a kick rhythm, but concentrated on a more constant, stronger kick. This week I swam over 8,000 yards (not including what I swam in the lesson), and I’m pretty impressed with myself.

Tomorrow, I’m scheduled to do about 60 miles/3:30. It’s supposed to be bitter cold and windy. Awesome. I’ve got what I think is appropriate gear; I guess I’ll find out for certain tomorrow morning.
