Swimming like a fish

This morning I swam. And then swam some more and then some more. In the end, I swam 3,000 yards in a little over an hour. It was the longest swim of my training so far, and the longest swim that I have ever done. And it felt like it. And it still feels like it!

Going into this morning, I would guess my longest pool swim was around 2,400 yards and my longest open water was the 1.5 miles at Alcatri. Obviously, this morning’s swim was in sets, but the main set was 15×100 with 10-20 seconds rest. It was just plain tough. Thank goodness I moved things around and did that swim today instead of yesterday!

Tonight, after work, I went back to the gym and lifted. It felt good – this was the first time that I really did all the exercises, in order and tried to get at least 25 reps per set. It was tough work. Like John said to me the other, I know this strength training will pay off later in the season. It’s sorta funny that I used to really love the lifting and just do the cardio to keep in shape and as a warm-up to the lifting. Now, it’s totally the opposite. I guess it’s just what I’m used to now. Also, I certainly couldn’t do what I’m doing triathlon-wise with the bulk that I had a few years ago. And, even if I wanted to, I wouldn’t be able to maintain that muscle while doing all the cardio. Now I workout with a goal, instead of just trying to get “bigger” or bench press more weight, it’s all about the races. I like this better, much better.
