100 Fewer Things – Part 2

I haven’t forgotten about my 100 Fewer Things goal. I spend a fair amount of time thinking about what else I’m going to get rid of and then go in bursts around the house, collecting stuff and piling it up to go bye bye. I had one of those bursts last weekend and ended up with the below pile of stuff:

These 26 items (you can’t see it but there are 4 books in that pile) plus the 22 that I got rid of in the first go-around brings me to a total of 48.

One “problem” is that I also acquired four things since I started, so my net number so far is 44.  Leaving me with (at least) 56 things to go.

The thing about that “problem” is that I’m happy with everything I’ve added. A Pacific Mountain Runners trucker hat (and I actually did run in the mountains this morning for the first time in ages!), a lacrosse ball to replace the flattened trigger point massage ball in the photo above, and two gifts from Rich Roll: an RRP “Plantpower” T-shirt and a DVD copy of the documentary “Cowspiracy“. The T-shirt is rad and will get a lot of wear. I’m excited to watch the DVD and then pass it along to others.

Getting rid of the small stuff like clothing, papers and junk is rewarding but doesn’t make a huge difference when I look around the house. There are some bigger things that will be in one of my next rounds that definitely will make that difference.

Since I’ve started this #100FewerThings challenge, I’ve been seeing more and more resources online about decluttering and minimizing. I assume that it’s not unusual to see this type of stuff at the beginning of year. An article from Refinery29.com called “How to Purge Everything You Don’t Need From Your Home” is the most helpful one I’ve read recently. In some ways, it goes further than I’m ready to do right now, but it’s been helpful in thinking about some of the things like how many extra towels we really need and whether or not I really need to keep all those pretty-looking but almost never-used cookbooks on our shelves.

  1. i love this de cluttering. I do it myself. I try to live with minimal things. Curious about what you thinks in terms of books…. Those are mostly difficult for me to part with, even ones I didn’t enjoy that much. I like looking at them all…they seem to tell a story of their own…different times in my life…

Hi Angie! We went through books last week and I just wrote about it. Elizabeth and I both love to read and collect so many books. Every few years, we go through and give a bunch away. We both have our favorites that we’ll just never give away – because we love the story or because they remind us of something or someplace or some time. We got rid of at least 50 and still have too many on the shelves to count! 🙂
